Kickstart your chartership journey: New year, new goals

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: GSE Offer, Learning & Development, Reward & Recognition

As we begin 2025, it's an ideal time to set new professional goals. Achieving chartership is one of the most rewarding and impactful goals you can pursue. This not only elevates your career but also enhances your skills, knowledge, and credibility within your field.

If you are ready to seize this opportunity, please email gse@go-science.gov.uk or complete the GSE Professional Recognition Offer form to receive our new professional recognition support booklet and start your journey to chartership.

To illustrate the transformative power of chartership, consider the inspiring story of GSE member Sue Richards, who achieved Chartered Engineer status through the express route in 2024.

Sue Richards, Chartered Engineer and GSE member

2024 Professional Recognition week started off fantastically well for me as I received the news that I had been awarded Chartered Engineer status from the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).

But where did it start? Previously, I gained the status of Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with the IET. I don’t have a degree, so I thought IEng would be the limit to my achievements, but what I really wanted was Chartered Engineer status,

Then last year, I saw the GSE Profession were supporting people through their professional recognition journey, I had a ‘now-or-never’ moment and signed up. What I really liked was the option to sign up for the six-month fast-track option. I knew if I worked hard, it would be achievable if I had the right support.

I was paired with an amazing mentor, and looking back, our first meeting must have been funny, with me talking about my lack of degree. They listened, asked lots of questions about my current role, what I do when I am not working and then explained that not having a degree made my application different, but not impossible. They then explained to me what my application needed to look like, where I needed to focus, and the work I needed to do to achieve this.

Off to work we went, not just on my application but on the presentation for my interview, and they even arranged a mock interview for me. I was as prepared as I could be going into that interview. And what a team – it worked!

I put professional registration off for far too long as I didn’t believe in myself, but I also didn’t have the right support group around me to achieve it. If you want to be professional registered, then consider signing up for the offer, as I’m sure the GSE Professional Recognition Cohorts will be the right support group for you. The wealth of knowledge and support in the GSE Profession is exactly what you need to succeed.”

Sue’s story is a testament to the power of chartership. It is a journey of personal and professional growth that offers lifelong benefits. As we step into the new year, take inspiration from Sue and set your sights on achieving professional recognition.

The GSE Profession is ready to support you, email gse@go-science.gov.uk or complete the  GSE Professional Recognition Offer form to begin the journey to chartership.
