Private Secretary to BEIS Chief Scientific Adviser (HEO), Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is looking for an exceptional candidate to work as Private Secretary to the Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). The role offers an opportunity at the heart of the Department, working on a portfolio and reporting directly to the Grade 6 Head of Office.

Through working together to run the Private Office, you will support the Director General/Chief Scientific Adviser in his role working with the BEIS Secretary of State, Ministers, Executive Committee and policy and evidence teams from across the Department to ensure decisions are informed by the best science and engineering advice, and by the most appropriate research and development.

The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in science and engineering and be able to work as an effective bridge between the Chief Scientific Adviser, Ministers’ offices and the wider Department. Experience in a Private Office or strategic policy role and a background in science or engineering is desirable.

Graduate Geographic Information (GI) Analyst - Earth Observation (EO), Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)

As a graduate GI professional within the Defra group, you will use a wealth of geomatics technology and data for surveillance, geo-intelligence gathering and topographic mapping of the rural landscape. You will be part of the Geographic Information Technical Unit that is responsible for overseeing and delivering a range of geomatics activities such as earth observation, data-collection, machine learning, spatial analysis and designing enterprise geospatial information solutions.

Working with our existing team in Reading, you will be mentored by experienced specialists, offering a great opportunity to learn a range of niche skills. You will join a structured one year programme where you will get experience working with different teams across the agency and wider government, delivering projects, working with our supply chain and working in an exciting fast growing area of geospatial innovation and earth observation. Towards the end of the initial year, you will be encouraged to apply for a more senior permanent role.
