On Day 4 of Professional Recognition Week, we’re focusing on the recognition journey of one of our Science and Engineering Fast Streamers (SEFS). David Franklin, a SEFS alumni based at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, reflects on his experience applying for Professional Recognition following the SEFS scheme.

What motivated you to pursue professional accreditation during your time on (or shortly after) the Science and Engineering Fast Stream?
My academic background is in applied mathematics and based on this I applied to become an associate member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) earlier this year as the professional body most relevant to my experience. I’ve applied to become a Charted Scientist (CSci) to enable further professional development and to have my skills and experience in science recognised in my field. I also wanted to join to reconnect with the wider mathematics community!
What challenges did you encounter and how did you overcome them?
To apply for CSci, you need to be a full member of a professional body. This can be challenging for non-specialists, as most professional bodies require you to have significant experience in their academic discipline to be a full member. I contacted my relevant professional body (the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, IMA) and they said that I could apply as an associate member.
As the majority of my Civil Service experience had been non-mathematical, I engaged with the IMA to understand how this would affect my application to become a Chartered Scientist. They were very open that my application would be assessed by a panel of mathematicians, however they were happy for me to still apply and would request additional information if needed. Where possible in my application I tried to make connections to my core mathematical skills and experience and wider science that I have delivered in my career.
What advice would you give to others considering Professional Recognition?
Like any application for chartership, the application for CSci takes time. Put the time aside to write your application, approach the professional body before submitting, and talk to someone else who has applied to learn about their experience and to get advice on your application!
Available support when applying for Professional Recognition
The GSE team offer a variety of support pathways to help you with applying for Professional Recognition – our express or aspiring cohorts can help you draft up your examples and coach you through the process. If you're interested in joining one of our cohorts please contact us at gse@go-science.gov.uk.
It can be challenging to find the right organisation for you, especially with so many diverse fields within the Civil Service. If you’re curious to find out more about the skills needed and about the support we provide to help you through the application process, we have a handy support booklet. For a copy of this booklet please email us at gse@go-science.gov.uk.
