As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, Dr Beverley MacKenzie, a lifelong advocate of apprenticeships, reflects on their unique value in combining academic study with real-world experience.
Why apprenticeships matter
From my experience, apprenticeships at all levels are an excellent way to gain both academic knowledge and practical work experience. This belief has been reinforced at various stages of my life.
Starting out: my journey as a young tech
As a young tech eager to break into the IT industry, I was fortunate to secure a graduate apprenticeship position within an Internet Service Provider (ISP). During this time, I rotated through various teams within the ISP environment-working on cabling, supporting the Network Operations Centre, and even building bespoke hardware.
The combination of hands-on experience and academic learning gave me a comprehensive, 360-degree understanding of the industry. More importantly, it taught me the value of continuous self-development while working.
Returning to academia
Later in life, when my children were older, I chose to return to university to pursue a PhD. During this period, I was again fortunate to work as a teaching fellow while studying. This experience allowed me to view the apprenticeship model from the other side-as an educator.
As a lecturer at a Scottish university, I saw firsthand how the blend of academic learning and industry experience equips students with the tools they need to successfully launch and sustain their careers.
The power of apprenticeships
In my opinion what makes apprenticeships so powerful is their ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice. They enable learners to apply classroom concepts in real-world scenarios, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills that employers value.
Apprenticeships also promote adaptability-a key trait in today’s fast-changing job market-while offering a structured pathway for career progression. For businesses, they provide access to motivated talent and help build a workforce aligned with industry needs. For individuals, they offer confidence, competence, and a sense of purpose.
Beyond skills: lifelong benefits
In addition, apprenticeships encourage lifelong learning and professional growth. They often open doors to networking opportunities, mentorship, and hands on exposure of a variety of technologies, which can accelerate career development.
Unlike traditional academic routes, apprenticeships immerse learners in the realities of their chosen field from day one, making them job-ready and resilient. This practical foundation, combined with academic rigor, creates well-rounded professionals who can adapt to evolving industry demands.
