The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Regulation is a powerful Government tool to address market failures, influence behaviour and promote positive action. As a result of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, OPSS was identified as the national regulator for construction products in January 2021. This high profile and crucial role has spurred expansion of our team, and we are looking for 20 new enthusiastic individuals to join our teams.

Testing Strategy Team
The Testing Strategy team delivers across the whole portfolio of OPSS regulatory and testing requirements. The team holds responsibility for the testing strategy and chairs the testing oversight panel, both of which feed into the overall OPSS strategies and high-level decision making.

The Science Team
The Science team ensures OPSS has access to scientific evidence and advice for the development of policy, and the delivery and enforcement of product safety regulations in OPSS. It is a multidisciplinary team including scientists, covering specialisms including analytical chemistry, biology and toxicology.
The Research, Evidence & Dissemination Team
The Designation and Determination Team (DDT) work with evidence driven colleagues across the team to ensure expert technical support and leadership functions are delivered to ensure operational and delivery needs of colleagues are met by carrying out high quality research and providing evidence on which to base decisions.
The Engineering & Technology Team
The Engineering & Technology Team generate high quality engineering and technology-based evidence to underpin policy, enforcement, and the future direction of OPSS. We ensure that consumers remain protected, and that regulation remains proportionate in the face of technological advancement and the UK’s exit from the EU.
